Herstory Vol 3: Thriving from Struggles

Featuring April, a senior at Concord College of Sino-Canada, who will be studying Psychology at the University of Toronto, originally from China.

Self-exploration always plays a vital role in our life. To achieve our ultimate goal, the first thing we have to do is clarify who we are and who we want to be. When I was in elementary school, there was a break within my family- my parents got divorced. It was not long after then, that my mom had the first huge failure in her life, when she became addicted to gambling, which drove me to be more independent and mature beyond my age. I always wanted to do something when my mom struggling with her emotions, similarly, with the understanding of my mom’s emotions, I care about others’ feelings. Within my school, my peers describe me as always being supportive and considerate toward others, and I realize that several students in our school have been struggling with depression and self-image problems, I initiated and founded a student club THE LIGHT, where students can not only talk through about their issues and learn together about these issues in more scientific perspectives. Also, teachers gave me a lot of belief which made me become the president of the student club union which manages the whole student club system. I am glad that I am insightful and that I can always notice people’s needs, and I can proudly say that I am being a kind person which quality is valuable for me. In other words, I do realize who I want to be and keep moving in this direction.

Words of Advice

Always be yourself. Do things you wanna do and get rid of things you dislike. Even though you understand that the thing is good, if you dislike it, it will be only good for others, not for you.
